The Body and the Acid/Alkaline Balance
Good nutrition (healthy diet) is the key to a healthy body and a healthy oral cavity (teeth and gums).
Based on scientific reviews, if there is too much sugar in one’s diet then there is a high chance that one will develop cavities and gum disease. This means the body’s functions are out of balance and the result is the disease process. How do we maintain a healthy body system? The main thing we can control to prevent disease is the foods we eat. A healthy pH balance is critical for our overall health.
Our life and health depends on the body’s ability to maintain a constant pH of 7.4 in a process called homeostasis. The acid-base balance of the body is critical to good health. Good health is obtained through a balanced diet, which is a pH-balanced diet. A pH-balanced diet consists mostly of alkaline foods. If the diet is not pH balanced, the disease process will begin. Our modern diets are comprised of both alkaline and acidic foods, unfortunately mostly acidic foods.
Alkaline Foods – have the ability to energize the body and leave an alkaline residue in the urine. The alkaline urine (pH=7.0) indicates a healthy body. At normal pH range, all enzymes and electrolytes of the different digestive systems, organ systems, and glandular systems function normally. When the enzymes and electrolytes function at optimum level, the cells of all the glands and organs also begin to work at maximum function.
Acidic Foods – decrease the body’s energy level and leave acid residue in the urine. The acidic urine has a pH of less than 7.0. Excess acid waste alters correct heartbeat, robs the blood of oxygen, and creates a sluggish thyroid, which affects metabolism and weight.

It is therefore vitally important that there is a proper ratio between acid and alkaline foods in the diet. There is no single intake ratio of alkaline to acid foods that applies to everyone. Each individual must find his/her proper balance of acid and alkaline food intake. When the ideal ratio is maintained, the body has a strong resistance against disease.
